Flavin, Stars Walkoff To Split With Rockford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Garrett Flavin (Chicago, Ill.) ripped five hits on Saturday including a walkoff single in the bottom of the 13th as the Dominican University baseball team salvaged a split with the Rockford College Regents, falling in game one 13-2 before rallying for a 14-13 extra-inning win in game two.

With the score tied at 13-13 in the bottom of the 13th, Chris Kemp (Oak Lawn, Ill.) took a breaking ball back up through the middle for a lead off single for the Stars.  Kemp was then lifted for a pinch-runner, Chad Wickless (Arlington Heights, Ill.).  After a sacrifice bunt and an infield single by Richie Green (Chicago, Ill.), Flavin stepped to the plate with runners at first and second, lining a single to left with Wickless able to slide in at home as the throw took the Rockford catcher away from the plate.

Cody Mueller (Addison, Ill.) picked up the win for the Stars, throwing seven innings out of the bullpen.  In picking up his first career win, Mueller surrendered just six runs, four earned, on seven hits and four walks while striking out four.

Offensively, Flavin and shortstop Jon Basinski logged three hits apiece with Basinski reaching base seven times with a walk and three hit by pitches.  Casimir Zwiazek (Chicago, Ill.) scored four runs for the Stars, going two-for-four at the plate with a pair of walks while Dernulc drove in a tram-high three runs.

The win helped the Stars rebound from a seven-inning loss in game one of the twin bill.  In that game, Rockford scored 13 unanswered runs, including an eight-run fifth, after the Stars took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  The Regents roughed up the Stars' pitchers for 13 hits while two Dominican pitchers issued seven free passes.

The doubleheader split pushes the Stars' overall record to 9-8, equalling the team's win total from a year ago when Dominican went 9-31.  The Stars return to the diamond on Sunday, traveling to Milwaukee to take on the MSOE Raiders.  The doubleheader is scheduled for a noon first pitch at Wisconsin Lutheran's Neumann Family Baseball Field.
