Stars Sweep Edgewood On The Softball Diamond

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Dominican University softball team extended its winning streak to three straight games on Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader from the Edgewood College Eagles, 4-1 and 10-1, in Madison, Wis.

With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the fourth, Sarah Slouber (Willow Springs, Ill.) drove a 3-2 pitch over the centerfield fence to give the Stars a 2-1 advantage.  Dominican then capitalized on an Edgewood throwing error, with Melissa Summaria (Algonquin, Ill.) roping a two run single ahead of a two-run homer by Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.).

Slouber then sparked a four-run rally in the top of the fifth with another solo shot, this time out to left.  After an RBI single by freshman Corinne Wimmer (Elgin, Ill.), Summaria played long ball, knocking a two-run shot out to left-center to cap the day's scoring.

Jori Cicale (Steger, Ill.) improved to 7-4 as she picked up the win in game two, scattering six hits over four innings as she allowed just one run while striking out one.

Summaria and Budz, the Stars' two and three hitters, finished the game a combined 6-for-8 with five RBI.

In game one, Andrea Pinarski (Goshen, Ind.) scored on an Eagles' wild pitch to stake the Stars to a 2-1 lead in the top of the second they would never surrender.

Pinarski added a two-run single in the top of the fifth and Cicale mowed down the Eagles in the circle.  The Stars' right-hander allowed just one run on six hits and one walk while striking out nine.

Five Stars had two hits in the game including Pinarski who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Stars are now 10-10 on the season and 3-3 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC).  Dominican will return to the diamond on Wednesday when the Stars host the North Park Vikings for a non-conference twin bill.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. as the Stars open their 2012 home schedule in Forest Park.
