Box Score The Dominican University baseball team snapped a three-game losing skid with a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Benedictine University Eagles in game one of a Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
Mitch McCaffery (Johnson Creek, Wis.) and
Zack Roszak (South Chicago, Ill.) made big pitches for the Stars all game, leaving ten runners on base for the Eagles.
McCaffery picked up the win, surrendering three runs as he scattered five hits and five walks over seven innings while striking out two, improving to 3-0 on the season. Â Roszak, making his third appearance out of the Stars' bullpen, picked up his second save of the season, allowing just one unearned run in two innings of work and stranding the tying and go-ahead runs at second and third in the bottom of the ninth.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Ryan Mullin homered to right, scoring Dan Zust.
The Stars tallied the game's next four runs, starting with an RBI double by
Adam Quinn (Libertyville, Ill.) in the fifth that scored
Tim Varallo (Chicago, Ill.) who reached on a two-out bunt single.
Dominican evened the score with a squeeze bunt laid down by
Richie Green (Chicago, Ill.) in the sixth. Â
Lenny Cunzalo (Chicago, Ill.) then gave the Stars the lead with a two-run single to right, driving in his team-best 28 and 29 runs of the season.
Benedictine got a run back in the bottom half of the seventh as Mullin drove in his third run of the ball game with a sacrifice fly to plate Chris Wanderling.
Dominican added an insurance run in the top of the eighth as
Garrett Flavin (Chicago, Ill.) laced a single into left-center to score Green.
The Eagles got that run back in their half of the eighth, but stranded a runner at third in the eighth and runners at second and third in the bottom of the ninth.
Game two got underway, but was halted in the fourth with the Eagles holding a 5-4 lead. Â The Stars had jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Eagles were able to plate the next five runs in the game after an hour delay due to lightning. Â The game is scheduled to resume on Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the Sports Complex in Lisle.
