Baseball Drops Twin Bill To Edgewood

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Dominican University baseball team dropped a pair of tight games on Saturday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader with the Edgewood College Eagles including an 11 inning affair, 7-6, in game two.

In game one, the Stars jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning, as five straight runners reached safely for Dominican, including a two-run double by freshman Richie Green (Chicago, Ill.).

However, the Stars managed just two hits and five base runners the rest of the way while the Eagles scored eight unanswered runs, including six in the top of the fifth, sending 11 hitters to the plate in the frame.

Brad Clark led the Edgewood offense, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Right-hander Mitch McCaffery (Johnson Creek, Wis.) suffered the loss for the Stars, falling to 3-1 on the season.  Over nine innings, McCafferywas tagged with all eight runs, seven of them earned, on 14 hits and two walks while striking out two.

In game two, Chris Kemp (Oak Lawn, Ill.) staked the Stars to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a two-run double down the left field line scoring Chad Wickless (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Garrett Flavin (Chicago, Ill.).  

The Eagles scored the games next six runs, pushing across two runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-2 lead. However, this time the Stars answered back, scoring a pair on an Eagles error in the seventh before evening the score in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double by Adam Quinn (Lockport, Ill.) who layered scored the game-tying run on a sac fly off the bat of Lenny Cunzalo (Chicago, Ill.). 

After a scoreless tenth, Edgewood's RBI single by DH Mike Selvaggi pushed across Brad Clark for what proved to be the winning run.  The Stars did manage a one-out single by Green, but he was caught trying to steal second before Quinn went down swinging to end the game.

Zack Roszak (South Chicago, Ill.) was charged with the loss, working six scoreless innings out of the bullpen before giving up the game-winning single to Selvaggi.

The doubleheader loss drops the Stars to 14-17 on the season and 5-9 in the NAC.  Dominican will return to the diamond on Sunday, traveling to Sheboygan, Wis., to take on the Lakeland College Muskies in a twin bill.
