Stars Sweep Falcons To Reach 20-Win Mark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Dominican University baseball team swept a Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) from the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium on Saturday afternoon, pushing the Stars record to 20-18 and 11-9 in the NAC.  The twin bill victory ensures just the third .500 season in the Stars’ program history and marks just the second time the Stars have reached 20 wins in a season.

Mitch McCaffery tossed his team-best third complete game, improving to 4-1 on the year, as the Stars edged the Falcons 2-1 in game one.  McCaffery carried a no-hitter into the fifth before Concordia Wisconsin’s Mathew Scasny picked up an infield single.

The Falcons got on the board first, as Austin Sarauer lined a single to right to score Matt Schroeder in the top of the sixth.  However, the lead was short lived as a sacrifice fly by Chris Kemp (Burbank, Ill.) in the Stars’ half of the inning plated Adam Quinn (Lockport, Ill.) who had reached on an error to start the inning.

Dominican then took the lead in the bottom of the seventh as Garrett Flavin (Chicago, Ill.) drew a one-out walk and then went first-to-third on another Falcon error on Chris Garvey’s (Niles, Ill.) sacrifice bunt.  Tim Varallo (Chicago, Ill.) followed with an RBI bunt single, scoring Flavin with what proved to be the winning run.

McCaffery pitched around a leadoff walk and a two-out single in the eighth before striking out the side in the ninth.  McCaffery surrendered just five hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Dominican pitching continued to dominate in game two as Cody Mueller (Addison, Ill.) and Zack Roszak (South Chicago, Ill.) combined to surrender just one run on two hits and five walks while striking out six.  Mueller picked up the win, improving to 3-2 while Roszak tossed the final three and two-thirds innings to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Offensively, a six-run fifth gave the Stars a 6-1 lead and they never looked back.  Varallo picked up another two hits in the contest, including an RBI double that tied the score at 1-1 in the Stars’ six-run fifth.

Dominican, now all alone in sixth place in the NAC, will close out the 2012 regular season with a doubleheader at Aurora University on Thursday.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Aurora’s Solfisburg Park.
