Stars Salvage Split With Game Two Win Over Marian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 After dropping game one of a Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) doubleheader with the Marian University Sabres 19-3, the Dominican University baseball team rebounded with a thrilling 6-5 victory.  The split was the third straight NAC series split for the Stars as they move to 3-3 in NAC play and 11-10 overall.

In game one the Stars took a 3-0 lead after the top of the second as Lenny Cunzalo (Chicago, Ill.) ripped a first inning RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch.  In the second inning, freshman Tim Varallo (Chicago, Ill.) scored on a balk and the Stats appeared in control.  However, the Sabres roughed up the Stars' pitching for 10 runs on nine hits in the bottom of the third, sending 13 hitters to the plate.

Marian plated five more runs in the fifth and pushed across fur in the sixth as Sean Bolton (Western Springs, Ill.) was tagged for the loss, lasting just two and one-third innings and being tagged with eight runs on seven hits and two walks.  Dominican's senior right-hander falls to 4-3 on the mound, suffering back-to-back NAC defeats.

Marian pounded out 19 hits in the seven-inning affair while the Stars logged ten hits, two apiece for Varallo and Chris Kemp (Oak Lawn, Ill.), but Left 11 runners on base.

The Stars trailed 5-2 after three innings in game two before a three-run fourth, capped by a two-run single by Cunzalo, evened things up.  The score remained 5-5 into the ninth as Dominican managed to push a run across as Chad Wickless roped a one-out single to left to plate Garrett Flavin (Chicago, Ill.) in what proved to be the winning run.

Zack Roszak (South Chicago, Ill.) worked a scoreless ninth to pick up the save, working in relief of Mitch McCaffery (Johnson Creek, Wis.) who picked up the win to improve to 2-0 on the season.  Over eight innings, McCaffery surrendered five runs, pitching around ten hits and eight walks while striking out two.

Wickless was three-for-four in the game with three runs batted in, while Cunzalo drove in a pair of runs, going two-for-three with a pair of walks.

The Stars return home to host the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader in Schaumburg on Monday.
