Box Score 2 The Dominican University baseball team continued its “splitting” ways on Monday, dropping game one of a doubleheader to the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors 13-1 before pulling out a 10-7 victory in the nightcap to move to 12-11 overall and 4-4 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC).
In game two, the Stars took advantage of a costly Warriors’ throwing error to plate three unearned runs and take a 10-7 lead at the end of seven innings. Freshman
Cody Mueller (Addison, Ill.) then set the Warriors down in order in the eighth and ninth innings to pick up his second career victory.
Mueller came on in relief of
David Ershbock (Round Lake Beach, Ill.) with two outs and runners at the corners in the top of the sixth. Mueller got WLC’s Brandon Mantz to groundout to second to keep the score tied at 7-7. Mueller faced ten batters in the ball game, retiring all ten including six strikeouts.
Offensively, the Stars rapped out eight hits, two apiece for
Jon Basinski (Chicago, Ill.) and
Tim Varallo (Chicago, Ill.) with Basinski and
Tim Dernulc (Dyer, Ind.) driving in two runs apiece.
In game one, the Warriors’ Jaime Paumen puzzled the Stars at the plate, tossing a complete-game four hitter. Paumen surrendered just one earned run while striking out three.
Zack Roszak (South Chicago, Ill.) took the loss on the mound for the Stars, dropping to 2-3 on the season. Roszak was tagged with 12 runs, nine earned, over six innings. The Warriors roughed up the Stars’ senior left-hander for 16 hits.
The Stars will return to the diamond on Tuesday, hosting the University of Chicago Maroons for a non-conference tilt at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium. Dominican then returns to NAC play on Saturday, hosting cross-town rival, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars, for a noon doubleheader in Schaumburg.
