Stars Topped By Spartans To Open Postseason

Box Score The top-seeded Aurora University Spartans welcomed the Dominican University baseball team to their first Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Baseball Tournament, handing the Stars an 11-1 loss in eight innings in Dominican's first postseason appearance since 2006 when the Stars competed in the Lake Michigan Conference.

Senior left-hander Zack Roszak (South Chicago, Ill.), making his first start since April 9, was tagged with the loss for the Stars, falling to 3-6 as he battled through six-plus innings, surrendering nine runs on ten hits and four walks while striking out four.

The Spartans roughed up Roszak for a six-run second to take a 7-0 lead in the early going.  The key at-bat in the inning was an eight pitch affair as the Spartans' second baseman, Carlos Olavarria, drew a two-out walk to load the bases.  Roszak then hit the Spartans' Ryan Adams to push across the first of six runs, all tallied after two outs in the inning.

Offensively, the Stars managed six hits, two apiece for Jon Basinski (Chicago Ridge, Ill.) and Chris Kemp (Oak Lawn, Ill.) while Garrett Flavin pushed across the Stars' lone run on a fielder's choice in the top of the fifth.

Dominican will return to work in the double-elimination tournament tomorrow morning, battling the Edgewood College Eagles in an elimination game.  The Eagles, the fifth-seed in the tournament, fell 10-3 to the Benedictine University Eagles in their first-round matchup.  First pitch between the Eagles and Stars is slated for 10:00 a.m. at Herr Baker Field in Fond du Lac, Wis.  The winner will return to the diamond at 4:00 p.m. while the loser goes home.
