Stars Split With Regis And Kenyon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Dominican University softball team split a pair of games on day two of the team’s spring trip to Fort Myers, Fla., falling to the Kenyon College Ladies 4-2 before cruising through the Regis College Pride 10-1 in six innings.

Senior Emily Mahoney (Crystal Lake, Ill.) was tagged with the loss in the circle in game one, surrendering four runs on eight hits and four walks while fanning ten.

After scoring 22 runs on Sunday, the Stars’ bats looked to be primed for a big day, scoring two runs in the first on the Ladies.  However, managed just five hits the rest of the way and could not score despite loading the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth.

The Ladies knotted the game at 2-2 in the third with three straight hits after Mahoney struck out the first two hitters of the inning.  Then in the fifth inning, the Ladies tacked on two more on an RBI double off the bat of Chelsea Delaney.

Dominican threatened in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases but Allie Evans (Greenwood, Ind.) bounced into a 523 double play and then Armani Procter (Chicago, Ill.) flew out to right to end the inning.

The Ladies Maddy Stark then pitched around a leadoff single and a walk in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the complete-game victory for Kenyon.  Stark allowed just two runs as she scattered eight hits and three walks over seven innings while striking out three.

Jessica Wood (West Chicago, Ill.) wrapped out three hits for the Stars, including a two-run single in the bottom of the first.  Mahoney, trying to help her own cause, went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a run scored.

Dominican’s bats reemerged in game two, pounding out 14 hits against the Pride of Regis College.  Wood and fellow freshman Kaitlin Barajas (Dyer, Ind.) continued their offensive onslaught, going a combined 4-for-6 with four RBI.  Wood broke the game open in the sixth, driving in two on a single up the middle to put the Stars on top 8-1.  Evans and Julia Smith (Bartlett, Ill.) followed with back-to-back RBI singles to close out the scoring.

Freshman Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.) picked up her first collegiate win in the circle, surrendering just one run on four hits and two walks over five innings.

The Stars stand at 4-2 on the season and return to the diamond tomorrow with a pair of games against Newbury College and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.  Dominican will then enjoy an off day on Wednesday.
