Wins Pile Up For The Stars On Final Day Of Fort Myers Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Dominican University softball team swept a pair of games on the final day of the team’s spring trip to Fort Myers, Fla., topping the Penn State-Behrend Lions 9-0 in the morning session and then rallying for six runs in the top of the seventh to top the Northland College Lumberjills 9-4.

The Stars pushed across six runs in the bottom of the first against the Lions, scoring five runs after two outs on RBI singles from Kaitlin Barajas (Dyer, Ind.), Allie Evans (Greenwood, Ind.), Erica King (Lyons, Ill.) and Armani Procter (Chicago, Ill.) and an RBI double off the bat of Amanda Moran (River Grove, Ill.).

The Stars tacked on three more in the top of the second as the first three hitters reached base, including an RBI double to left by Barajas.  King added another RBI single in the frame and finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.  Barajas and Melissa Summaria (Algonquin, Ill.) also wrapped out two hits apiece in the winning effort.

Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.), a freshman right-hander, picked up the win in the circle for the Stars, tossing four innings in relief of Emily Mahoney (Crystal Lake, Ill.).  Locher allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out two to improve to 2-0 on the season.

In the win over the Lumberjacks, Northland College broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth but stranded runners at second and third as Mahoney struck out Sierra Reina to minimize the damage.

In the top of the seventh, Andrea Pinarski (Goshen, Ind.) drew a one-out walk and the Lumberjills Faye Koosmann committed two costly errors that led to six unearned runs.  The big blow in the inning was a two-run double into the left-center gap off the bat off leadoff hitter Sara Hausl (St. Charles, Ill.).

Dominican rapped out 12 hits in the winning effort but more importantly, the Lumberjills committed seven errors leading to six unearned runs.  Hausl finished the game going 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.

Mahoney picked up her fifth win of the season, improving to 5-1, as she gave up four runs, two earned, as she scattered nine hits while striking out seven over seven innings.

Dominican finished the spring trip 7-3 and stands at 8-4 on the season.  The Stars return to Chicago tomorrow evening and are scheduled to be back on the diamond on March 19, traveling to North Park University to take on the Vikings in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
