Eagles Fly Past Stars In Schaumburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Dominican University baseball team was swept by the Benedictine University Eagles at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium on Sunday in a Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) doubleheader, falling in game one 7-2 before dropping game two 12-3.

In game one, the Stars could muster just five hits while the Eagles pounded out 14 hits, including six extra-base hits.

Mitch McCaffery (Johnson Creek, Wis.) kept the Eagles off the board early as he allowed just three hits and a walk through the first four innings.

However, the Eagles broke through in the fifth, pushing across five runs on five hits and a Dominican error to open a 5-0 lead. Benedictine tacked on one more run off McCaffery in the seventh and then added a run off the Stars' bullpen in the eighth to extend the lead to 7-0.

Dominican finally got on the board in the last of the ninth as Tim Varallo (Chicago, Ill.) and Ryan DiCristafano (Streamwood, Ill.) scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch respectively. However, the Stars left the bases loaded as Joe Krasny (Berwyn, Ill.), the Stars' leading hitter in the season, flew out to right to end the game.

McCaffery was tagged with his third loss of the season, giving up six runs, three earned, on 12 hits and two walks.

Freshman Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.) was 2-for-3 at the plate in the losing effort, raising his average to .276 on the season.

In game two it was freshman Quinlan Milne Rojek (Minneapolis, Minn.) that was charged with the loss for the Stars. The right-hander lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits and two walks. The Stars' bullpen then gave up eight runs on 11 hits and four walks over the final four-plus innings.

Offensively, Dominican took an early 1-0 lead in the first as Lucas McKinney (Arvada, Colo.) singled home Krasny, picking up his ninth RBI of the season.

The lead was short-lived as Benedictine pushed across two in the top of the third and then broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fifth and then broke the game open with a five-run seventh.

The Stars will have a few days to recuperate before they travel to Elmhurst to take on the Blue Jays on Wednesday in a non-conference game under the lights. Game time is penciled in for 6:30 PM.
