Stars Edge Cougars

The Dominican University men’s tennis team topped the Concordia University Chicago Cougars by the slightest of margins, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon.  Mohit Shekhar (Burbank, Ill.) picked up the match-clinching point as he cruised past the Cougars’ Matt Gruenwald at number six singles, 6-1, 6-0.

The Stars fell behind 2-1 after doubles play, taking just the number one doubles flight with the team of Kevin Amarantos (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Greg Tabaka (Chicago, Ill.) improving to a perfect 4-0 in conference duals with an 8-1 win over Concordia Chicago’s Clinton Bienz and Chayanne Martinez.

Amarantos and Tabaka then led the charge as Dominican picked up four points in singles play.  Like Shekhar, Amarantos cruised past Bienz at number one singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Tabaka was met with a little more resistance as he was victorious 6-3, 6-2 at number two singles over Tim Staffeld.  At number five singles, Adrian Chavez (Berwyn, Ill.) improved to 2-1 in NAC duals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Cougars’ Patrick McIntosh.

The Stars now stand at 3-2 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC), currently tied for fourth in the standings with four NAC duals remaining.  Dominican will return to action on Saturday, traveling north to take on the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors and MSOE Raideers.
