Ninth Inning Drama As Stars Escape With Series Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 After dropping game one to the 7-2 to the visiting Lakeland College Muskies on Sunday afternoon, the Dominican University baseball team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth in game two to emerge with a 4-3 walk-off victory and salvage another series split in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play.

Trailing 3-1, Richie Green (Chicago, Ill.) reached first on a hit-by-pitch to lead off the bottom of the ninth for the Stars.  Quinlan Milne Rojek (Minneapolis, Minn.) followed with a walk and then Kevin Schwer (Evergreen Park, Ill.) reached on a fielder’s choice as he laid down a sacrifice bunt and the Muskies tried to get Green at third but he was able to beat the throw.  Green then scored as A.J. Dollinger could not field a ground ball hit by Joe Krasny (Berwyn, Ill.).  The Stars then evened the score as Lucas McKinney (Arvada, Colo.) was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game.  The Stars then walked off with the win as Adam Quinn (Libertyville, Ill.) hit a ground ball to short and Schwer was able to beat the throw to the plate.  In total, the Stars scored three runs in the frame on no hits, one walk, two hit batsmen and one Lakeland error.

Cody Mueller (Addison, Ill.) picked up the game two win for the Stars, tossing a complete-game.  Mueller was touched for three runs, none earned, while scattering 11 hits and striking out three and walking none.  Defensively, the Stars committed six errors behind Mueller as the sophomore pitched around errors in the second, fifth and eighth and stranded nine runners on the base paths.

The Muskies took a 1-0, capitalizing on a Stars’ error in the top of the first.  Dominican eventually evened the score in the bottom of the sixth as Tim Varallo (Chicago, Ill.) stole second and McKinney was able to score from third as the throw went into centerfield.  Lakeland pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh as the Stars allowed the first two hitters of the frame to reach on error before the Muskies’ Brent Steudel roped a two-run single to left-center.

The split moves the Stars’ record to 10-22 overall and 5-11 in the NAC.  Dominican returns to Schaumburg Boomers Stadium on Tuesday to take on the North Central College Cardinals in a non-conference tilt.  First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
