Emily Mahoney (Crystal Lake, Ill.) became the Stars’ all-time leader in strikeouts as she struck out Latisha Jones on three pitches in the fifth for her 474
th career punch-outs.
Mahoney carried a perfect game into the top of the fifth as the Stars rolled to a 13-0 win in five innings in game one. After setting down the first 16 hitters she faced, Ruth Spragins singled to break up Mahoney’s bid to be perfect. Mahoney then returned to form, getting Jones looking after a sacrifice to seal the victory.
Offensively, Dominican showed tremendous patience at the plate, scoring 13 runs on just four hits while taking 17 walks.
Kaitlin Barajas led the offensive charge, finishing just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle while going 3-for-3 with six runs batted in. The freshman slugger’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth capped the Stars’ scoring for the game.
In game two, Mahoney broke a string of 11 consecutive starts in the circle as the Stars turned to
Sarah Slouber (Willow Springs, Ill.) and
Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.) who combined for a three-hit shutout as the Stars took an 8-0 win in five innings. Slouber picked up the win as she surrendered just three hits and one walk while striking out four over four innings. Locher then tossed the fifth, allowing two walks but stranded those runners at first and second.
Offensively, Mahoney helped the Stars with her bat, belting a two-run home run in the fourth to put the Stars ahead 6-0 as part of a 3-for-3 performance with three RBI.
Erica King (Lyons, Ill.) upped her team-leading batting average to .407 as she raked out two hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
The wins push the Stars’ record to 22-8 overall and 14-2 in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) with a matchup against Benedictine University on deck. Dominican, currently in second in the NAC standings, travels to Lisle on Monday to take on the Eagles, who are currently in third place, just one-half game behind the Stars. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
