Box Score 2 The Dominican University baseball team was unable to pick up a victory in Mequon, Wis., falling to the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons 4-2 and 5-4 in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play.
In game one, junior
Mitch McCaffery (Johnson Creek, Wis.) was on the bump for the Stars, pitching another complete game but the Stars were unable to back up his outing on the hill. Over eight innings, McCaffery surrendered four runs on ten hits while striking out one. The loss moves McCaffery to a 2-5 record despite a 4.11 earned run average.
In game two, the Stars were unable to salvage a split despite leading 4-3 after six and half innings, eventually falling on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.
Ryan Kukla (Chicago, Ill.) was strong on the mound, pitching his third complete game of the season. Kukla was tagged for five runs on 12 hits and one walk while striking out two on 125 pitches. Kukla falls to 3-2 on the year.
The Stars started early out the gate. A
Lucas McKinney (Arvada, Colo.) single to left field helped drive in
Adam Quinn (Libertyville, Ill.) to give the Stars a 1-0 lead in the first.
In the third,
Kevin Schwer (Evergreen Park, Ill.) singled to center to score McKinney. The Falcons retaliated and put a run up on the board, in the bottom of the inning, to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
In the fourth, the Stars stole a run as
Tim Varallo and Quinn executed a double-steal with runners a the corners to plate Varallo. Quinn then scored as
Joe Krasny (Berwyn, Ill.) smoked a single up the middle to put the Stars on top 4-1.
The Falcons managed to get those two runs back in the bottom half of the inning then scored on a sac fly in the seventh to knot the game at 4-4. After the Stars stranded a pair of runners in the top of the ninth, the Falcons capitalized on a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, eventually scoring on Beau Burgert’s infield single to take the game.
After the losses in Wisconsin, the Stars fall to a 12-25 overall and 7-13 in the NAC. The Stars will have one day to recuperate before returning to the diamond for a non-conference matchup on Monday. The Stars will face the Elmhurst College Bluejays on the road. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM in Elmhurst at Butterfield Park. The Stars will be providing live stats of the final road game of the season.
