Let’s Play Two (Doubleheaders)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 On the final day of the 2013 regular season, the Dominican University softball team played a pair of Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) doubleheaders, going 3-1 on the day, splitting with the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons before sweeping the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders.

In game number one, the Stars took a 1-0 win over the Falcons as Armani Procter (Chicago, Ill.) launched a 3-1 pitch over the fence in right for her fifth home run of the season.

That was all the offense Emily Mahoney (Crystal Lake, Ill.) needed, as she tossed her eighth complete-game shutout of the season, retiring nine straight at one point and scattering three hits and one walk over seven innings while striking out 11.  The Stars’ ace pitched around a leadoff double in the top of the first, retiring the Falcons’ four and five hitters on strikes with runners at the corners.

The Stars managed just four hits off of the Falcons’ Jamie Schuh with Procter leading the charge, going 2-for-2 with a home run and a single.

In game two, it was the Falcons that emerged with a 4-1 win as the Stars committed five errors in the field while managing just two hits of the Falcons’ Melissa Perkins, one an RBI single by Procter in the bottom of the seventh.

The Falcons got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the first.  Concordia Wisconsin then built upon its lead in the top of the fifth scoring on a wild pitch before Alyssa Robison made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly.  The Falcons added an insurance run in the sixth as Jessica Liszka scored, capitalizing on three Dominican University errors in the frame.

Freshman Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.) was tagged with the loss despite a strong outing.  Locher surrendered eight hits and four walks as she was charged with all four runs, just two earned, while striking out three.

The Stars’ nightcap doubleheader featured a 5-2 win and a 9-1 win in five innings for the Stars over the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders.  Kaitlin Barajas (Dyer, Ind.) went yard three times in the twinbill, giving the Stars a 5-2 lead with a solo shot in the fourth inning of game one and launching a pair of two-run long balls in game two.  In total, the freshman feasted on the Crusaders’ pitchers, going 3-for-6 with five RBI.

Sarah Slouber (Willow Springs, Ill.) picked up the win in game number one, surrendering just two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine while Mahoney returned to the circle in game two, punching out seven while she was charged with just one unearned run on four hits.

The Stars closed out the regular season portion of their 2013 schedule with a 27-11 overall record, going 19-5 in NAC play.  Dominican will enjoy a few days rest before returning to action on Thursday in the 2013 NAC Softball Tournament hosted by Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wis.
