Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Emily Mahoney (Crystal Lake, Ill.) picked up right where she left off on Saturday, pushing her scoreless innings streak to 28, as she tossed a pair of complete-game shutouts on Sunday afternoon as the Dominican University Stars pushed passed the Edgewood College Eagles 2-0 and 4-0. Mahoney struck out 25 on the day and 48 on the weekend to get to 145 strikeouts on the season, shattering the Stars’ single-season mark of 124 just halfway through the season.
In game one, Mahoney carried a no-hitter into the top of the fifth until Dylan Bahrke led off the frame with a double to right. After a sacrifice bunt pushed Bahrke to third base, Mahoney logged back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
In the top of the sixth, the Eagles got their only other hit of the game against Mahoney as Jessica Spitzer lined a one-out double down the left field line. Mahoney was able to strand Spitzer as she induced a fly out to center before setting Katie Landon down on strikes. Mahoney then struck out the side in the seventh to pick up her tenth win of the season.
Mahoney struck out 15 hitters while walking just two and allowing two hits in tossing her ninth complete game of the season.
Dominican got both of its runs in the bottom of the second as
Allie Evans bounced a two-out single up the middle before taking second on a wild pitch. Evans then came across as
Melissa Summaria ripped a line drive off the glove of Spitzer at short. Summaria then came across as
Erica King (Lyons, Ill.) lined a double into the right-center gap.
Evans finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles. Summaria and King were each 1-for-2 while
Armani Procter (Chicago, Ill.) went 1-for-3 with a double.
Mahoney continued to deal in game two, this time scattering seven hits and two walks while using ten strikeouts to pitch out of jams in the third, fifth and seventh innings.
Procter provided all the offense Mahoney needed, breaking a scoreless tie with a two-run home run over the fence in right with one out in the fourth after King drew a leadoff walk. The Stars then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, capitalizing on a pair of Edgewood College errors.
Procter and
Amanda Moran (River Grove, Ill.) picked up a pair of hits in the game, as the Stars pounded out eight hits in total.
With the wins, Dominican improves to 16-6 on the season and a perfect 8-0 in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play. The Stars next test will come in the way of the defending NAC champion Benedictine University Eagles. Dominican travels to Lisle, Ill., to take on the Eagles Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
