Mahoney Perfect In NAC Tourney Opener

Box Score Dominican University's Emily Mahoney (Crystal Lake, Ill.) tossed the first perfect game in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Tournament history, as the Stars rolled to an 8-0 victory over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in game number one of the 2013 NAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

Mahoney only threw 54 pitches as she struck out four. Melissa Summaria (Algonquin, Ill.) kept the perfect game intact with a sliding catch as the Warriors' Mindy Schalinske roped a sinking liner into left to lead off the top of the fourth.

The Stars broke through on Kendra Thomas, the Warriors' starter in the circle, in the bottom of the second as Erica King (Lyons, Ill.) drove in Armani Procter with a double down the right field line. After a sacrifice bunt, King then came across on a passed ball to put the Stars up 2-0 after two innings.

The Stars bats went back to work in the bottom of the third after Mahoney picked up two strikeouts in the top half of the inning. Mahoney started the rally with a double to right, scoring as Kaitlin Barajas (Dyer, Ind.) doubled to drive in her team-leading 30th RBI of the season. Procter then drove in Barajas with a single into right.

After a scoreless fourth, the Stars' bats put the game away in the bottom of the fifth as Dominican pushed across four runs on four hits and one Warrior error. The big blow was a double down the left field line off the bat of Sara Hausl (St. Charles, Ill.) that brought home two runs.

In total, Dominican pounded out ten hits other win, led by Barajas, Procter and King who all went 2-for-3.

Mahoney moves to 20-6 on the season while the Stars climb to 28-11 overall. Dominican will return to the diamond at Alverno Field at 4:00 p.m. to take on the Benedictine University Eagles, the two-seed in the 2013 NAC Tournament.
