McCaffery Blanks Spartans In Final Start Of the Season

Box Score Mitch McCaffery (Johnson Creek, Wis.) tossed his sixth complete game, saving his best for last as he picked up his first shutout of the season as the Dominican University baseball team knocked off the Aurora University Spartans in game number one of today’s Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) twinbill.

McCaffery scattered seven hits and one walk over nine innings while striking out five to move to 3-5 on the season.

The Stars scored one run in each frame of the middle innings on a pair RBI singles by Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.) and one by Richie Green (Chicago, Ill.).  Schuster’s first RBI came in the bottom of the third after Adam Quinn (Libertyville, Ill.) led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield.  After a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, Schuster laced a single into right-center to plate Quinn.

After McCaffery pitched around a Dominican University error and escaped a bases loaded jam with a strikeout, Green plated Alex Hernandez (Des Plaines, Ill.) who singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth.

McCaffery then set the Spartans down in order in the top of the sixth Schuster brought home Joe Krasny (Berwyn, Ill.) who drew a one-out walk.

With the win, Dominican improves to 13-26 overall and 8-13 in NAC play while the Spartans drop to 22-11 overall and 16-5 in the conference.  The Stars will close out the 2013 season with game number two against the Spartans on Saturday evening.
