Box Score The Dominican University men's volleyball team climbed back to .500 in their inaugural NCAA Division III season, sweeping through the Marymount University (Va.) Saints, 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 on Saturday evening at the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Crossover in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Stars started slow out of the gates in set one, trailing 20-15 before a ballhandling error by the Saints sent
Nicholas Costa (Oak Lawn, Ill.) back to serve. Costa served the next four points including back-to-back kills by
Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) to even the score at 20-20 and force a Saints' timeout. After a Saints sideout,
Charlie Spry (Barrington, Ill.) evened the score back up at 21-21 with his fourth kill of the set. With Spry serving, a Saints' error gave Dominican its first lead of the set before a kill by Royko set Spry up to finish the set with an ace.
The Stars posted a .321 attack percentage in the opening set and went 15-for-21 in sideouts. Spry continued his hot play from the morning when he posted a team-high 19 kills in a four-set win over Cairn, tallying five kills on nine swings.
The Stars played their best set of the match in the second set, racing out to a 12-7 lead and never looking back. Dominican was 15-for-18 on sideouts in the set, posting 20 digs led by four from Royko and three from libero
Brooks Nevrly (Downers Grove, Ill.).
Dominican then put the Saints away in the third set, opening an 8-5 lead. Despite letting Marymount back to within one at 16-15, the Stars scored four of the next five points before closing out the match on a kill by
Robert Mead (Darien, Ill.).
Royko paced the Stars' offense with 13 kills on just 26 swings while committing only four errors.
Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) dished out 29 assists in the winning effort.
As a team, Dominican posted a .259 hitting percentage with 36 kills on 81 swings with 15 errors. The Stars were 78-percent for sideouts for the match while the Saints managed a 62-percent sideout percentage.
With the win, Dominican climbs back to .500 for the first time this season at 4-4 overall. The Stars are 2-0 on the opening day of the CVC Crossover and will close out the Crossover action tomorrow with #15 Thiel College at 1:30 p.m.
