Stars Top Nationally Ranked Thiel

Box Score The Dominican University men's volleyball team picked up a win over the fifteenth-ranked Thiel College Tomcats to close out the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Crossover on Sunday afternoon. The Stars took just four sets (25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 25-22) to knock off their first ranked opponent of Dominican's inaugural season as a NCAA Division III program.

Zachery Sinn (Winfield, Ill.) and Charlie Spry (Barrington, Ill.) combined for 32 kills while Brooks Nevrly (Downers Grove, Ill.) collected 19 digs to lead the 5-4 Stars. Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) doled out 46 assists and logged ten digs for Dominican's second double-double of the season.

With the first set tied 12-12, Spry stepped back to serve back-to-back points for the Stars, including a service ace that started a 5-1 run for the Stars that opened a 17-13 lead. The teams traded points the rest of the way until Spry's kill closed out Dominican's first set win.

Dominican posted a .323 hitting percentage in the first set while their defensive coverage at the net forced the Tomcats into a .167 attack percentage, forcing nine hitting errors.

The teams traded leads in the second set until the Tomcats used a four-point run to break an 18-18 tie before Thiel raced to the second set win to even the match.

Dominican's offensive attack cooled in the second set, managing just a .083 hitting percentage with eight errors to 11 kills on 36 swings. The Tomcats did not allow many Dominican runs, posting a 71-percent sideout percentage.

Sinn breathed new life into the Dominican attack in the third set, knocking down nine of his match-high 17 kills in the set with no errors on 12 attempts. Nevrly collected 11 digs in the set with the Stars going 17-for-24 on sideouts. Trailing 11-10, Coyne stepped back to serve four straight points for the Stars. The run was sparked by back-to-back blocks by Sinn and Mason Solbrig (Lake Villa, Ill.).

The Tomcats eventually evened the set at 16-16 but a kill by Dominican's Aidan Spangler (Western Springs, Ill.) ahead of a Tomcats' attack error reopened a two-point lead for the Stars they would not relinquish.

Dominican opened the fourth set with a block by Spry and Solbrig and Robert Mead (Darien, Ill.) followed with a kill as the Stars led from start to finish to close out the win.

With the win, Dominican pulls above .500 for the first time on the season, moving to 5-4 overall after running the table with three wins at the CVC Crossover. The Stars sit idle until February 19 when they open CVC West Division play with a 7:00 p.m. match against the MSOE Raiders at Dominican's Igini Sports Forum.
