Stars Snap Skid, Top Raiders

Box Score The Dominican University men's volleyball team halted a two-match losing skid with a three-set (25-20, 25-15, 25-23) win over the MSOE Raiders to cap a tri-match featuring the Stars, Raiders and Ramapo College Roadrunners. The Stars went 1-1 on the day, moving their overall record to 10-11.

The Stars managed to post a .256 attack percentage despite getting just one kill on five swings in one set from Zachery Sinn (Winfield, Ill.), the team-leader with 215 kills on the season and averaging 3.12 kills per set. Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) and Nicholas Costa (Oak Lawn, Ill.) picked up the slack, combining for 18 kills on 40 swings while committing just five errors.

With the first set tied at 17-17, David DeMarco (Downers Grove, Ill.) stepped back to serve four consecutive points capped by a service ace to put the set away for Dominican. Dominican hit .316 in the first set and went 60-percent on sideout attempts, aided by five Raider serving errors.

The Stars shined in the second set, going 12-for-16 on sideouts and posting a .391 attack percentage in the set. Aidan Spangler (Western Springs, Ill.) collected five of his six kills on the night in the second set.

The Stars trailed 5-3 in the set before Mason Solbrig (Lake Villa, Ill.) served four straight points for the Stars after a Dominican sideout. The Stars' run included kills from Costa, Spangler and Charlie Spry (Barrington, Ill.) and was aided by a pair of Raider attack errors. The run put the Stars on top 8-5 and Dominican never looked back, using another five-point swing midway through the set to open a ten-point lead.

Dominican put the match away in the third despite hitting just .139 in the frame and committing a total of ten errors in the set. The Stars did post a 56-percent sideout percentage while holding the Raiders to just 51-percent on sideouts. Costa tallied six of his kills on the night in the deciding set, helping the Stars to put the match away.

Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) doled out 24 assists, eight per set, in the Stars' three-set victory. Royko led all attackers with a match-high ten kills.

Defensively, Spry collected a team-best seven digs while Spangler tallied five total blocks in the winning effort.

Dominican will return to Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) West Division action on Thursday night, traveling to Sheboygan, Wis., to take on the #12 Lakeland College Muskies. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
