Stars Sweep Big Blue In Non-Conference Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Dominican University baseball team swept the Milliklin University Big Blue at Sunnyside Park in Decatur, Ill., in a non-conference series Saturday afternoon. The Stars improve to a record of 6-5 on the year with the doubleheader sweep at Millikin.

Game One – Dominican 7, Millikin 2
The Stars' bats staked starting pitcher Mitch McCaffery (Johnson Creek, Wis.) to an early lead. Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.) deposited a 2-2 fastball over the fence in left center with a pair of runners aboard to put the Stars on top 3-0 in the bottom of the first.

Two innings later Schuster delivered for the Stars again, hitting a sacrifice fly to plate Tim Varallo (Chicago, Ill.) to make it 4-0 in favor of the Stars.

Millikin managed to get two runs in the sixth because of two Dominican errors but those would be the only runs that the Big Blue would put up in the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Stars sealed the deal with three insurance runs. Varallo and Joe Lyons (Chicago Ridge, Ill.) each ripped RBI singles and Varallo later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Joe Krasny (Berwyn, Ill.).

McCaffery tossed his second complete game of the year, picking up his first win of the season. McCaffery's surrendered just the two, unearned runs while scattring six hits and one walk. The Stars' 6'1 right-hander struck out eight.

Game Two – Stars 5, Millikin 2

The Dominican bats again provided an early lead, this time for starter Ryan Kukla (Chicago, Ill.) as Lyons connected for a two-run home run, the first of his collegiate career, in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the third, Millikin pushed across one run before Kukla got some defensive help as Varallo made a diving catch in left field to end the inning, leaving the bases full of Big Blue.

The Big Blue was able to tie the ballgame in the fifth on a sac-fly.

The tie score was short lived as Dominican broke the tie and came ahead for the rest of the day in the bottom half of the inning. Krasny singled and scored Kevin Schwer (Evergreen Park, Ill.) from third. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Schuster singled to pick up his fifth RBI of the day.

In the bottom of the eighth, Schwer hit a sac-fly to left to cap the scoring for a 5-2 Dominican victory.

Making his fourth start of the season, Kukla picked up his second win of the season as he lasted seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three. Cody Mueller (Addison, Ill.) picked up the save, working the final two innings and allowing just one walk.

Overall DU had a season-high 19 hits on the day down in Decatur. Cumulatively, the Stars had two home runs, three sac-flys, and four sacrifice hits on the day because of their situational hitting.

The Stars will have a week off before the 2014 NACC Opening Day. The Stars will host the Rockford University Regents in a doubleheader at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium. First pitch is set for noon on Saturday, March 29th. The Stars will be providing live statistics and video for the home opening series. Immediately after, the Stars will travel to Mequon, Wis., to take on the Concordia-Wisconsin Falcons at Kapko Park at noon on Sunday.
