Box Score The Dominican University baseball team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday afternoon, topping the Northland College LumberJacks, 3-1 in 12 innings. Stars' right-hander
Cody Mueller (Addison, Ill.), making his first start of the season, lasted ten innings, surrendering one run on six hits and three walks while striking out seven, but did not figure in the decision.
Mueller stranded runners for the LumberJacks in five out of the first six innings and did not have his first one-two-three inning until the bottom of the seventh when he struck out the first two hitters he faced before inducing a weak pop out to
Thomas Smith (Lockport, Ill.) at shortstop.
The Stars, who had five hits all day, got on the board in the fifth when
Royce Salay (Henderson, Nev.) laced an RBI single down the left field line to plate
Tim Varallo (Chicago, Ill.) who reached on a hit by pitch before stealing second to put himself in scoring position for Salay.
Mueller carried a shutout into the bottom of the eighth. After getting the first two hitters of the inning, Mueller surrendered a two-out double to Mitch Henderson. After a visit from Stars' head coach Steve Hardman, Mueller allowed a run-scoring single to Peter Aerts that evened the score at 1-1.
The Stars squandered a leadoff double by designated hitter
Lucas McKinney (Arvada, Colo.) in the top of the ninth before Mueller set the LumberJacks down in order in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
After a scoreless tenth,
Ryan Hoff (Marengo, Ill.) took to the mound in relief of Mueller. Hoff pitched into and then out of a bases loaded jam with nobody out. Matt Lennon, who singled to leadoff off the inning for Northland, tried to score on a shallow fly ball off the bat of Jensen Doyle, but was erased by Quinlan Milne-Rojek (Minneapolis, Minn.) who made the start in right field for the Stars. Hoff then got Jacob Hodgdon to bounce back to the mound to end the threat and strand runners at second and third.
In the top of the 12
th, the Stars took advantage of a pair of Northland miscues, putting runners at the corners with one out after back-to-back errors.
Joe Krasny (Berwyn, Ill.) plated what proved to be the game-winning run with a single to right-center. Milne-Rojek then laid down a squeeze bunt to add an insurance run.
Hoff then pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 12
th to pick up his first win of the season.
Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.) had a pair of hits for the Stars while Howard went 4-for-5 with a double and a walk for the LumberJacks.
The Stars now stand at 1-2 on the season after dropping a doubleheader to the St. John's University Johnnies on Monday. Dominican returns to the diamond on Wednesday, taking on Emerson College Lions. First pitch is slated for 10:00 a.m. EST.
