Stars Top Visiting Lions In Four Sets

Box Score The Dominican University men's volleyball team picked up its first win in Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) West Division play on Friday evening, knocking off the College of Mount St. Joseph Lions in four sets (21-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-17).
 
The Stars shrugged off a slow start, nearly erasing a seven-point deficit (20-13) in the first set.  The Stars hit just .170 in the opening set while the Lions hit a .244 clip in the first, their highest attack percentage of the night.
 
The young Stars evened the match, playing some of their best volleyball of the night in the second set.  Dominican posted a .471 attack percentage in the frame, knocking down eight kills on 17 attempts while committing no errors.  Across the net, the Lions committed ten errors as the Stars led the set from start to finish.
 
In the third set, Dominican used a pair of three-point spurts early in the set to open a 14-11 lead.  Then with the score at 16-14, Mason Solbrig (Lake Villa, Ill.) sparked another three point run with a kill to extend the Dominican lead to 19-14.  After a Lions sideout, Robert Mead (Darien, Ill.) capped another three-point swing with an ace before the Stars sprinted to the finish.
 
The Stars then put the match away, posting a .364 hitting percentage in the deciding set.
 
Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) ran the Stars' offense, collecting 38 assists.  Zachery Sinn (Winfield, Ill.) knocked down a team-high 11 kills while Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) and Charlie Spry (Barrington, Ill.) logged nine kills apiece. 
 
As a team, Dominican posted a .286 attack percentage while holding the Lions to a .163 hitting percentage.
 
Dominican will look to string together back-to-back wins when the Stars return to the court on Saturday.  Dominican plays host to the Fontbonne University Griffins with the match scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start in the Igini Sports Forum.
