Game One: Dominican 8, Marian 6
The Stars played from behind early, giving up a four spot in the top of the first to the visiting Sabres. The Stars, behind starting pitcher
Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.), committed a pair of errors in the first inning, leading to three unearned runs.
Ashley Rea (Lockport, Ill.), after going 8-for-10 on Sunday, jumpstarted the Stars' comeback with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first, later scoring on a Sabre error.
Marian got that run back in the top of the third as Amber Johnson lined a one-out double to right field, later scoring on a fielder's choice to make it 5-1 in favor of the Sabres.
The opportunistic Stars clawed back in the bottom of the third, tallying just one hit in the frame, a leadoff single by
Sara Hausl (St. Charles, Ill.), but pushed across five runs in the frame thanks to three Marian errors to take the lead 6-5.
Dominican added to its lead in the fourth as Rea roped a one-out triple to the gap in left-center. Schneider followed with an RBI single up the middle to plate Rea for the third time in the game.
The Sabres pulled within a run in the top of the sixth as Sara Terrian launched a long solo home run over the fence in left field. It was one of just five hits the Sabres managed off of Schneider who came on in relief in the second. The Sabres put two more runners on base in the inning but Schneider stranded them at second and third as she got Danielle Gerth out on strikes to end the inning.
Dominican tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Schneider picked up an RBI single before sitting the Sabres down in order in the seventh to pick up her second win of the season. Schneider surrendered just two runs after the Sabres' four run top of the first to move to 2-1 on the year.
Hitting one-two in the Stars' lineup, Rea and Schneider tallied two hits apiece and scored four of the team's eight runs.
Game Two: Dominican 7, Marian 6
Dominican fell behind early again in game two, surrendering two runs in the top of the first to the Sabres on a pair of errors. The big shot was an RBI double by Johnson hit down the right field line. Freshman
Siena Gyure (Crown Point, Ind.) then settled in in the circle for the Stars, surrendering nine of the next 12 of the next 13 hitters she faced.
The Stars evened the score in the bottom of the second on a two-out single by Rea that scored
Armani Procter (Chicago, Ill.) and
Catherine Conte (Elmwood Park, Ill.).
Schneider gave the Stars the lead in the bottom of the fourth, lining a two-run triple into the left-center gap to score
Kimberley Giannini (River Grove, Ill.) and Hausl. The Stars added two more in the fifth, carrying a 6-2 lead into the top of the sixth.
In the sixth, Gyure allowed the first three hitters of the inning to reach before giving way to Schneider in the circle with the bases full of Sabres. Schneider minimized the damage, allowing just one run to score on a fielder's choice.
The Stars added what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth as Schneider singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Kaitlin Barajas (Crown Point, Ind.).
The Stars then strapped in for a wild ride in the seventh. Schneider sat the first hitter of the inning down on strikes. The Sabres then got two singles and a walk to load the bases for Johnson who hit a double to the wall in center to score two. After a walk and a strikeout, Schneider issued another free pass with the bases loaded to push across another run and pull the Sabres within a run at 7-6. Schneider then sealed the victory as she got Nikki Jakel to fly out to deep center to end the game.
Offensively, Schneider rapped out another two hits, going 2-for-4 in game two with two RBI and a run scored. In the circle, she picked up her first save of the season while Gyure moved to 2-2 on the year, surrendering three runs, just one earned, on two hits and four walks.
