Stars Split With BenU, Snap Six-Game Skid

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Dominican University baseball team split a doubleheader with the visiting Benedictine University Eagles on Monday at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium, dropping game one 14-3 in eight innings before hanging on in the nightcap for a 9-8 victory.

With the split, the Stars move to 18-15 overall and 7-9 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).  Dominican will enjoy some rest before returning to the diamond on Sunday, April 27th, when the Marian University Sabres come to Schaumburg for a NACC doubleheader.

Game One:  Benedictine 14, Dominican 3 (8 Inn.)

The Stars trailed just 5-3 heading to the seventh after pushing across three runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.) got the Stars on the board, knocking in Joe Krasny (Berwyn, Ill.) who started the inning with a double to the gap in left-center.

Benedictine answered with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh.  Tyler Floyd provided the offensive spark, with a base-clearing double to center.  The Eagles then tacked on six runs in the top of the eighth to finish off the Stars.

Cody Mueller (Addison, Ill.) took the loss on the mound, falling to 1-3 on the season.  Mueller was charged with nine runs on 11 hits and three walks over seven-plus innings of work.

Offensively, the Stars managed nine hits led by Krasny and Schuster who combined to go 5-for-8 with a double.

Game Two:  Dominican 9, Benedictine 8

Dominican led 9-2 in the top of the ninth before the Eagles plated six runs to pull within 9-8 before Ryan Freeman (Barrington, R.I.) shut the door on the Benedictine comeback.  The big blow in the ninth was a grand slam by the Eagles' Tim Hendricks off of Freeman but the Stars' left-hander regrouped and got Tom Byrne to bounce out to the end the game.

Schuster gave the Stars' a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, roping a two-run double down the left field line with the bases loaded.

After Benedictine evened the score in the fourth, Dominican pulled back out in front in the bottom of the fifth after Thomas Smith (Lockport, Ill.) picked up a sacrifice fly to score Quinlan Milne Rojek (Minneapolis, Minn.).  Later in the frame, Lucas McKinney (Aravada, Colo.) lined an RBI single to left to score Krasny and put the Stars on top 4-2.

Dominican added a run in the sixth, as Quentin Becquey (St. Julien Le Faucon, France) drove in a run when he bounced into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.

The Stars added three runs in the seventh on a two-run double by Tim Varallo (Chicago, Ill.) and an RBI single by Milne Rojek to put the Stars up 8-2.  Dominican then plated what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the eighth when Varallo singled to score Smith with two outs.

Chance Emlund (Chicago, Ill.) picked up the win for Dominican as he went seven-plus innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits and five walks while striking out four.

Milne Rojek, McKinney and Schuster tallied three hits apiece for the Stars while Varallo drove in three as he went 2-for-6 with a double and two runs scored.
