Box Score The Dominican University softball team dropped their second straight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) game, falling to the Benedictine University Eagles 2-0 before game two was postponed with the Stars trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second.
In the top of the third, Kelly Mieszala singled up the middle with one out but was cut down trying to steal second before Sarah Koch deposited a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left-center to break a scoreless tie.
The Stars threatened in the bottom of the fourth and
Alyssa Domico (Naperville, Ill.) and
Kaitlin Barajas (Dyer, Ind.) roped back-to-back one-out singles to put runners at first and second for Dominican. With
Sara Hausl (St. Charles, Ill.) at the plate, Domico got caught in no-man's land after a pitch in the dirt was blocked and quickly recovered by Kailee Cable who threw behind Domico to pickoff the Stars' lead runner. Hausl then grounded out to end the inning.
After a scoreless fifth, added an insurance run in the top of the sixth as Katie McKay was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded after falling behind in the count 1-2. The Eagles managed the run without a single hit in the inning, drawing three walks and capitalizing on a Dominican error prior to the hit-by-pitch.
The Stars left a runner on base in the top of the sixth after a one-out single by
Ashley Rea (Lockport, Ill.), sending the game to the seventh with the Stars trailing 2-0.
Barajas tallied her second hit of the game, leading off the bottom of the seventh with a single to center. After back-to-back flyouts,
Emaly Burns (Chicago, Ill.), on to run for Barajas, was gunned down trying to take third on a single to left by
Kimberley Giannini (River Grove, Ill.), ending the game.
Dominique Schneider (Lockport, Ill.) took the loss in the circle for the Stars, dropping the freshman to 9-3 on the season. Schneider surrendered just two runs, one earned, on five hits and five walks. Schneider's counterpart Melissa Guzior, allowed just six hits and did not issue a free pass to the Stars in picking up the win for the Eagles.
In game two, the Eagles scored on a wild pitch by Dominican starter
Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.) in the top of the second as the rain began to fall.
The game was then halted in the middle of the inning with a makeup date still to be determined.
The loss drops the Stars to 22-11 overall and 13-4 in the NACC, good for second in the conference standings. In addition to the continuation of Monday's halted game, the Stars have just two conference series remaining, taking on the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons on Saturday and the MSOE Raiders on Sunday.
