Box Score The Dominican University softball team resumed their halted game with the Benedictine University Eagles from Monday evening on Wednesday, falling 9-5 in eight innings.
Picking up in the bottom of the second, Dominican's
Allie Evans (Greenwood, Ind.) blasted her first career home run on the first pitch of the day, knotting the score at 1-1.
Benedictine pulled back in front in the top of the third when Kelly Mieszala doubled to score Erin Kotlarz. Dominican's
Haley Locher (Lisle, Ill.) minimized the damage in the inning, getting the next three hitters, including a punchout of Shannon Fritsche to strand Mieszala at third.
The Stars took their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the fourth when
Kimberley Giannini (River Grove, Ill.) and
Armani Procter (Chicago, Ill.) blasted back-to-back solo home runs to chase Melissa Guzior with one out.
The Eagles rallied back in the top of the fifth as Mieszala led off the inning with a double. Locher got the next two hitters before Fritsche lined a single to center to score Mieszala and even the score at 3-3. Alex Daviera followed with a two-run home run to right-center as the Eagles opened a 5-3 lead.
The Stars got one run back as
Kaitlin Barajas (Dyer, Ind.) drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the fifth. With Locher on to run, Evans singled through the right side of the infield to score Locher. Dominican then evened the score at 5-5 on an RBI single by Barajas that scored
Ashley Rea (Lockport, Ill.) in the bottom of the sixth.
After a scoreless seventh, Benedictine plated four runs in the top of the eighth. The first run came on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sarah Koch who flew out to the wall in left with the bases loaded. With runners at second and third, Kailee Cable laid down a squeeze bunt to score Kotlarz. The Eagles then tacked on two more on a swinging bunt by Daviera.
Dominican got a one-out single by
Dominique Schneider (Lockport, Ill.) but could not push across any runs in their half of the eighth.
Schneider took the loss for the Stars, falling to 9-4 on the season. The Stars' freshman was charged with four runs, three earned, on three hits and five walks.
Offensively, Schneider rapped out three hits while Evans went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The loss drops the Stars to 22-12 overall and 13-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). The Stars close out the regular season this weekend, traveling to Concordia Wisconsin on Saturday and to MSOE on Sunday.
