Box Score Dominican University's record-setting baseball season came to a close on Saturday afternoon with a 7-5 loss to the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons at Kapco Field in the 2014 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament. The loss drops the Stars, who set the program's single season win record with 23, to 23-18.
The Stars' offense pushed across two runs in the top of the first. Cody Schuster's (Las Vegas, Nev.) RBI single pushed across Quinlan Milne Rojek (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Joe Lyons (Chicago Ridge, Ill.) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Joe Krasny (Berwyn, Ill.).
Chance Emlund (Chicago, Ill.) worked into trouble in the bottom of the second as the Falcons evened the game at 2-2. Emlund hit leadoff man ahead of a single by Matt Schubert putting runners at first and second. After a fielder's choice and a strikeout, the Falcons plated two runs on Jordan Matheibe's bloop single to center.
Dominican answered in the top of the third as Krasny and Schuster combined for a two-out rally. Krasny lined a single through the right side and then scored when Schuster roped a double to the gap in left-center.
The Falcons pulled in front for the first time with a three-run fourth. Mathiebe tripled down the line in right field to score Luke Scheuerlein with one out. Tyler Crass followed with a single to plate Mathiebe. Crass went all the way to third after Emlund's pickoff attempt sailed up the line. Crass then scored when Brandon Seifert singled, putting the Falcons ahead 5-3.
Emlund's day came to a close with two outs in the fifth, giving way to Quentin Hayes (Indianapolis, Ind.). Hayes surrendered two more runs over 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and a walk. Ryan Hoff (Marengo, Ill.) tossed a scoreless inning before giving way to Ryan Freeman (Barrington, R.I.) who tossed two scoreless innings.
Krasny manufactured a run in the Dominican half of the fifth, singling to center and taking second when Mathiebe had trouble with the ball in center. Krasny took third on a wild pitch, just beating the throw from catcher Beau Bergert, and then came across on another wild pitch from Tyler Goss.
The Stars put two on in the top of the eighth as Krasny and Schuster opened the inning with back-to-back singles but failed to score, stranding a pair of runners in scoring position.
Dominican refused to go quietly, scoring a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Tim Varallo (Chicago, Ill.) with one out. Unfortunately, Milne Rojek lined out hard to second before Krasny flew out deep center to end the game.
Krasny finished the game, going 4-for-5 with four singles and three runs scored. Schuster was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in. Thomas Smith (Lockport, Ill.) and Varallo had two hits apiece in the losing effort.
Emlund dropped to 3-2 in taking the loss for the Stars while Goss improved to 6-2 for Falcons. Concordia Wisconsin advances to the NACC Tournament championship round where they will meet the Concordia University Chicago Cougars. The winner receives the NACC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament.
