Box Score 2 Mequon, WI – The Dominican University baseball team traveled up to Concordia University Wisconsin for a doubleheader matchup falling short in both games 5-4 and 4-2.
The Stars started the scoring in the top of the first inning of game one as Brandon Diedrich led off the frame with a single through the right side. Garrett Wano stepped up to the plate next hitting a home run down the right-field line giving the Stars the early 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
In the top of the third inning, Wano stepped up and hit another home run extending Dominican's led to 3-0. The Stars would take care of business defensively in the inning not allowing the Falcons to score.
The Falcons responded in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff walk. The Falcons would then get hit by a pitch to advance the runner to second. The next batter would hit a double to right field that brought the runner home from second cutting the Stars lead to 3-1.
Tyler Trojan got hit by a pitch in the top of the seventh before Grayson Downing singled advancing Trojan to second. Diedrich would then reach first on a fielding error by the Falcons allowing Downing to advance to second and Trojan crossing the plate making it 4-1. The Falcons would respond in the bottom of the seventh as a leadoff double was followed by a single to plate the runner from second to cut the lead to 4-2.
CUW would keep their momentum going in the bottom of the eighth inning leading off with a walk before a single advanced the runner to second. Another single would bring the runner from second to home plate advancing the runner from first to second making it 4-3. The Falcons would score again from a throwing error by the Stars to even the score at four apiece. The Falcons would then close out game one with a home run in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Stars 5-4.
In-game two the Stars would fall behind early as the Falcons would get walked before a single would advance the runner to second. CUW then singled it up the middle to bring the runner from second across home plate to give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead.
CUW would score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off of a walk and single before the Falcons hit a triple to center field to bring the two runners in making it 3-0. The Falcons would score again in the bottom of the eighth that would extend their lead to 4-0.
The Stars would try to answer in the top of the ninth when Bryant Bagshaw singled before advancing to second on a fielding error on the Falcons before advancing to third. Ryan Simak was then hit by a pitch before Matt Galdi grounded out to second allowing Simak to advance and Bagshaw to score to cut the lead to 4-1. Simak would advance to third off a single by Jake Polonus before crossing home plate off a single by Trojan cutting it to 4-2.
In-game one the Stars recorded eight hits with one error. Wano would step up for Dominican in game one as he had two home runs in the game. In-game two Dominican had nine hits and two errors in the game. Hayden Young had eight strikeouts while Brett Carroll had three strikeouts in game two.
"I told the team after the games today that I was disappointed with the loses but not at the way we played," said Head Coach
Steve Hardman. "We, unfortunately, could not put it all together. We pitched well enough to win both games today, but we are just missing something as a team. When we find that missing thing then we will take off and be very tough to play against."
The Stars return to action Wednesday, April 7th when they travel to Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin to take on Marian University in a double-header matchup with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
