Schaumburg, IL – The Dominican University baseball team split a home series against the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlett Hawks on Saturday afternoon. The Stars would walk off in extra innings 5-4 in game one before dropping game two 13-11.
Game One Recap:
After a scoreless first inning, the Scarlett Hawks got on the board first as an RBI single gave them the early 1-0 lead. The lead would be short lived as
Brandon Diedrich plated
Keegan Brandt to knot the game up ar one a piece.
IIT would have a hot fourth inning as they plated two in the inning to re-take the lead 3-1. The Stars answered back as Diedrich would remain hot as a sacrifice fly plated
Tyler Trojan to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
Both teams' bats would go quiet until the seventh inning when IIT was able to put one on the board to make it 4-2.
In the seventh,
Kevin Evans came up clutch as a RBI triple plated two to give the Stars the boost they needed and tie the game at 4 all.
Game one would go into extras as the offenses for both teams would come to stalemate until the tenth inning.
Matt Galdi decided to end the game in the tenth as his sacrifice fly would score the winning run and give the Stars the 5-4 victory.
Game 2 Recap:
The Stars would strike first in game two as a sac fly from
Garrett Wano made it 1-0. The Scarlett Hawks would quickly bounce back in the second as a three-run inning made it 3-1.
In the top of the fourth added two more on the board to make it. 5-1 lead.
The fifth inning would see the Stars explode. A fielder's choice would plate
Kevin Evans to cut in to the Scarlett Hawks lead 5-2.
Garrett Wano's single to left field would bring in
Grayson Downing to make it a two-run deficit. Diedrich would keep the scoring alive with a sacrifice fly to plate
Matt Galdi and make it 5-4. Cameron Stafford's bat became the difference as his RBI single plated two more runs to give the Stars a 6-5 lead. Ending the scoring would be Downing who would make his presence known as his RBI single would extend the lead 7-5.
The Stars would pick up where they left off in the sixth inning as a wild pitch plated Galdi before a Diedrich double scored Wano to make it 9-5 Stars.
The Scarlett Hawks got back into it in the seventh as a costly Stars' error helped IIT plate two to make it 9-7. IIT would go on to put up 5 more runs retake the lead 12-9. IIT would plate another via a sacrifice fly to make it 13-9.
A late run by the Stars would proved to not be enough a Diedrich plated Galdi before Wano scored on a wild pitch to give the Stars a fighting chance down 13-11.
IIT punched the door closed in the night to salvage a split.
Head Coach
Steve Hardman commented on today's games as they head into the final regular season games. "Today was the first time in a while we played good baseball. We were one bad inning away from a sweep. We had good starting pitching and a great day at the plate by
Matt Galdi. We fought all day and I hope we can carry the same fight into a very crucial last day of conference season."
The Stars will look to fight for the last playoff spot as they will take on the Scarlett Hawks tomorrow on the road. First pitch is set for 12:00pm.
