Men's soccer and sports information will be taking advantage of the off-season months to catch up with some of our men's soccer alum to reflect on their experience at Dominican University (or Rosary College). Today we catch up with Brendan Gavin from the class of 2026.
What have you been up to since graduating from Dominican?
Following graduation this past May, I have been studying and sitting for my CPA (Certified Public Accountant) exam which I hope to complete before I start my full-time role at EY in their Financial Services Assurance practice. Within this division I am most likely to continue with the team I interned with in the summer of '25 (Insurance). I'm looking forward to spending my summers traveling as I hope to explore more places outside of the U.S.
What do you miss most about Dominican?
The DU community. During my time at DU, I was heavily involved on campus within Athletics, the Brennan School of Business, and the Welcome and Information Desk. I was able to build connections with amazing people who continuously pushed me out of my comfort zone. I keep in touch with teammates, professors, classmates, and friends and I am looking forward to staying connected with the University as I move into the real world!
What was your most memorable moment while at Dominican?
Although I have had many memorable moments at Dominican, I would have to say the most memorable was scoring my only collegiate goal in the conference tournament semi-final against Aurora. I scored in the first half off of a corner to put us up 1-0 going into half-time. I was playing through a foot injury, it was Halloween night, it was snowing, and it was my mom's birthday. The game was a typical DU battle, and we came up on top after taking it to penalties. That year we won the NACC and advanced to the NCAA National Tournament, which is something that I hope everyone gets to experience as a DU Men's Soccer player.
What advice would you give to an incoming player?
A piece of advice that I would give to an incoming player would be something that the DU men's soccer staff has instilled into me beginning on the first day of preseason. "Win your day." This can start with something as simple as making your bed before you head to class in the morning. Knowing that you are doing things right from the very start of your day brings a positive, professional, and winning mindset which is crucial to navigating the complexities of everyday life. Most mornings I start my day with a run (it can be as little as 20 minutes) and find strength in knowing that I am making myself better. This simple morning "win" allows me to attack the day with a fresh mindset knowing that I can tackle whatever might come my way!
