The Dominican University women’s volleyball team pulled into a tie for second place in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) with the Edgewood College Eagles, dropping the Eagles in three sets (25-21, 25-13, 25-18) in front of the Stars’ home crowd on Friday night. The Stars (19-6, 8-2) and Eagles (14-13, 8-2) stand one game behind NAC leader Concordia Wisconsin.
Dominican jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set, forcing Edgewood College to use a timeout. Edgewood came roaring back, scoring seven of the next ten points to pull within three at 13-10. Dominican quickly settled down, opening up a 17-11 lead before winning the first set 25-21.
Senior
Darcy Kammeier (Kirkwood, Mo.) posted seven of her match-high 15 kills in the opening set to establish the tone for Dominican.
The Stars raced out to a 15-7 lead in the second set, to cruise to a 25-13 set victory. The Stars enjoyed an 8-1 run in the set, leading by as many as 12 points along the way. Dominican forced ten Eagles’ hitting errors in the set, while committing just three errors in the frame and nine on the night.
Trailing 8-4 in the third set, the Stars scored 13 of the next 16 points to jump ahead 17-11, capped by a thunderous kill by freshman
Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich.). The two teams traded points the rest of the way to seal the victory for the Stars.
Dezelski, into the Stars starting lineup for the second consecutive match, finished the night with eight kills and eight digs.
Dominican University setter
Jessica Guerrieri (Plainfield, Ill.) posted the game’s only double-double with 26 assists and 11 digs.
As a team, the Stars forced 28 hitting errors, posting nine total team blocks while only allowing 27 kills for the Eagles. Conversely, Dominican hit a .314 clip, logging 36 kills on 86 attempts while committing just nine hitting errors.
The Stars return to the court on Saturday morning, hosting the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders in NAC action at 10:00 a.m. Dominican will then entertain the IIT Scarlet Hawks in non-conference action at 12:30 p.m.
