Dezelski Leads Stars to 3-0 Win over Concordia Wisconsin

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Led by sophomore outside hitter Claire Dezelski, the Stars handled the Falcons of Concordia Wisconsin tonight, 3-0, in their Breast Cancer Awareness Match.  The win improves the Stars’ record to 19-4 overall and a perfect 9-0 in Northern Athletics Conference play.

#Dezelski# (Northville, Mich./Ladywood) led all players with 13 kills and 12 digs on the night, recording an outstanding .522 attack percentage on 23 attempts.  In the second set, she knocked down four consecutive Stars’ points to take the score from a 6-6 tie to 10-7, a lead the Stars would not give up for the rest of the match.

Dominican would take the first set of the night 25-14 with 10 kills, each assisted by Jess Guerrieri (Plainfield, Ill./North).  Dezelski led the attack with four kills in the set, while Kellie Van Voorhis (Union Mills, Ind./La Porte) and Julie Schulenburg (Springfield, Ill.) each contributed two.

Set two also went 25-14 in favor of the Stars, as they went off for a .483 attack percentage with 16 kills in the set.  Guerreri controlled the Stars’ offense by assisting 13 of the 16 kills, while Dezelski once again led Stars in kills with six.  Freshman Michelle Talsma (Byron Center, Mich.) also had a nice second set, as she chipped in four kills of her own.

The third set would get no easier for the visiting Falcons (3-17, 2-6 NAC), as the Stars stayed hot and collected another impressive attack percentage (.382) to end the match with a .316 clip.  Seven different Stars would contribute to 16 kills in the set, while sophomore Missy Budz (Orland Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) stepped in for Guerreri to hand out eight assists.

Guerreri finished her night with a match-high 29 assists, once again more than the entire opposing team’s total.

Collectively, the Stars also recorded seven service aces on the night, which included the final point of the match delivered from senior Evelyn Gamboa (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace).  Their defense was also a contributing factor, as they recorded 10 team blocks, five of which were assisted by Van Voorhis.

In their efforts to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research, the Stars also raised more than $120 on the night, all of which will be donated to the Central DuPage Cancer Center.

They are next in action at the UW-Oshkosh MVP Invitational this Friday and Saturday, and begin the tournament with a match against Central College at 5:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.  More information on the UW-Oshkosh MVP Invitational can be found at: http://www.titans.uwosh.edu/WVolleyball/2011/Invite3.html
