Volleyball Goes Undefeated at UW-Oshkosh, Lawrence named Most Outstanding Player

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The Dominican University women’s volleyball team went a perfect 4-0 and the UW-Oshkosh MVP Invitational this weekend with two more wins today over the host Titans and UW-La Crosse.  With the wins, both 3-0, the Stars improve to 23-4, extend their win streak to 15 games, and remain undefeated in Northern Athletics Conference play (9-0).  Jacy Lawrence was named the Most Outstanding Player in the tournament, while Jess Guerreri also earned an All-Tournament Team selection.

Versus host UW-Oshkosh (16-12), it was the Stars’ defensive presence at the net that came up big in the win (26-24, 25-14, 25-20).  Becca Fritz (Mount Carroll, Ill./West Carroll) smothered 10 of the Stars’ 15 blocks with one solo and nine block assists.  Jacy Lawrence (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) also got her hands on five blocks, one solo and four assisted.

When the Titans were able to make a play past the block of Dominican, the rest of the defense picked up 66 digs in the match, led again by defensive specialist Liz Yakey (Sun Prairie, Wis.) who picked up 21 Titan attacks.

Offensively, Jess Guerreri (Plainfield, Ill./North) handed out 32 assists for an average of nearly 11 per set, and Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich./Ladywood) led the way in kills with 12.

Against UW-La Crosse (5-17) in the second match of the day, the Stars kept their momentum to win the match 25-19, 25-16, 25-16. Guerreri kept rolling and reached the 11 assists per set mark as she recorded 33 in the match. It would be Fritz and Evelyn Gamboa (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace) to lead the way in kills, each recording nine for attack percentages of .400 or better.

Defensively, two Stars picked up double-digit digs (Yakey-16, Dezelski-10), and the team recorded eight blocks, four of which were assisted by Fritz.

Guerreri and Lawrence were recognized for their play throughout the tournament, as both were named to the All-Tournament Team and Lawrence was honored with the Most Outstanding Player Award. Lawrence’s tournament numbers are highlighted by 49 kills, 39 digs, eight block assists and five block solos, while Guerreri totaled 138 assists, 42 digs, and six service aces.

Head coach Ryan Baumgartner feels good about his team’s focus.  “The girls have a common goal in mind, and the last two weeks they have worked very hard to achieve that goal.  I am proud of each and every member of this team.”

Next up for the Stars is their last non-conference opponent, the 16th-ranked Maroons of the University of Chicago.  The Stars will look to upend the Maroons on their own court this Wednesday, October 19, in a 7 p.m. match.
