Stars Clinch Sixth Straight NAC Championship

Box Score The Dominican University men’s soccer team continued its dominance of the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) on Saturday afternoon, staking claim to their sixth straight regular season conference championship and improving to 60-0-2 all-time in NAC play with a 2-1 overtime win over the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons.

Freshman Ryan Ybarra (Des Plaines, Ill.) notched the game-winner in the 99th minute, knocking in a long throw from Andy Lynch (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) that was flicked towards the back post by Kyle Boekeloo (Downers Grove, Ill.).  It was Ybarra’s seventh goal of the season and third game-winning goal, both tied for the team lead.

After a scoreless first half, the Stars took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute as Edwin Lagunas (Waukegan, Ill.) worked along the left flank before sending a cross through the box where Lio Tovar (Cicero, Ill.) was able to run on the end and knock in his seventh goal of the season.

The Falcons (12-5-1, 8-1-1) refused to go quietly, putting the Stars on their heels for much of the final 15 minutes of regulation, finally broke onto the scoreboard in the 88th minute as Jacob Streicher connected with 6’4 Jacob Pope for his fourth goal of the season to send the game in overtime.

In the overtime period both teams managed one shot, with the Stars finding the back of the net to move to 15-2-0 overall and a perfect 10-0-0 in NAC play.  In addition to clinching the NAC regular season championship, the Stars secured the top seed in the NAC Men’s Soccer Tournament, securing home field advantage throughout the tournament and securing a first-round bye.

Dominican will close out the 2011 regular season on Tuesday, traveling down Division Street to take on the Concordia University Chicago Cougars.  The Stars will then sit idle until Tuesday, November 1, when Dominican will host a NAC semifinal match.
