Dominican Wins a Five-Set Thriller to go 2-0 in NAC Play

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – It was a slow start for the Stars’ offense tonight in set one that gave way to a first set Warrior win, but the Stars would answer back in sets two and three to go ahead 2-1 in the match.  The visitors wouldn’t back down, though, tying things up after four and taking the match into the fifth and deciding set.  But the Stars would prove to be too much for the Warriors (2-6, 0-2 NAC), taking the final set 15-11 to improve to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in Northern Athletics Conference play.

The score would tie 11 times in the second set before a Warrior service error would decide the set 25-23 in favor of the Stars.  In set three, the Stars knocked down 16 kills, led by sophomore Becca Fritz’s (Mount Carroll, Ill. / West Carroll) five.  Set four saw the Stars down 14-20 before they crawled back to bring the score to 23-24, but the visitors would end up taking the set 25-23.

In the fifth and deciding set, senior Evelyn Gamboa (Chicago, Ill. / Queen of Peace) would spark the Stars’ offense by recording three kills in the first four Dominican points.  It was then sophomore Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich. / Ladywood) that sealed the win for the Stars, knocking down five kills in the last nine Dominican points.

The Stars’ defense picked up 70 digs on the night, with three players in double-digits, and the team would also record five blocks on the night with six different players contributing with block assists.

The Stars are next in action on Sept. 21, when they travel to Milwaukee to face the MSOE Raiders.  Game time is 7 p.m.
