Men’s Soccer Opens NAC Title Defense

Box Score The Dominican University men’s soccer team opened Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play on Saturday afternoon, dropping the Edgewood College Eagles 3-1 to move the Stars unbeaten streak in NAC regular season action to 53 games dating back to the conference’s inception in 2006.

Freshman Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa) jumpstarted the Stars’ offense, logging his second goal of the season, in the fourth minute to give the Stars an early 1-0 advantage.  Trent Miller (Rockford, Ill.) played long service on a restart towards the back post where Marvin was able to place a header past the Eagles’ Matt Dammen.

Twelve minutes later Leo Elizalde (Wheeling, Ill.) was able to get behind the Edgewood backline, thanks to a perfectly played ball by David Aranda (Wheeling, Ill.), and found himself with just the goalkeeper to beat, tallying what proved to be the game-winner.  Elizalde now leads Dominican with three goals, including two game-winning goals.

Edgewood narrowed the gap in the 37th minute as Alexander Ribeiro scored on the first shot of the game for the Eagles.  The goal snapped a streak of 242 minutes since the Stars had last been scored upon.

The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Stars into the 83rd minute when Dominican’s Edwin Rodriguez (Chicago, Ill.) added an insurance goal.  The Stars again took advantage of a restart as Miller’s service found the head of Rodriguez this time and the senior buried the shot for his first goal of the season and first since October 27, 2009.

Dominican dominated the stat sheet, ripping 18 shots while surrendering just two.  Dominican put nine shots on frame to just one shot on goal for the Eagles.

The Stars return to action on Wednesday night, traveling to Wheaton to take on the Wheaton College Thunder.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Joe Bean Stadium.
