RIVER FOREST, Ill. – After two close sets ending 25-22 in favor of Dominican, the Stars dominated in set three over visiting Alverno College, 25-7, and won their fourth consecutive Northern Athletics Conference match to stay undefeated in conference play. The win brings the Stars’ record to 12-4 overall and 4-0 in NAC play.
Dominican would lead 23-17 in the first on 12 kills by six different Stars, which included four by
Jacy Lawrence (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne). Alverno (3-15, 0-3 NAC) would close the gap, however, bringing the score to 22-24 before a service error would give Dominican the set 25-22.
In the second, the Stars would start up 5-0 after two service aces by
Jessica Guerrieri (Plainfield, Ill./North), and would lead by as many as nine at the 14-5 mark. Guerrieri would go on to assist 10 kills in the set and record one kill of her own in the 25-22 win.
It was in the third set that the Stars really started to show their strength, as they tallied the first 15 points while Guerrieri was at serve.
Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich./Ladywood) led the way with three kills in the 15-point surge, followed by
Kellie Van Voorhis (Union Mills, Ind./LaPorte) and
Evelyn Gamboa (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace), who had two apiece.
An Alverno timeout and kill from Morgan Stuckey would pause the Stars’ attack, but a quick sideout would lead to six more points in favor of Dominican and take the score to 21-1. Alverno would find six more points in the set, but Gamboa’s lone service ace on the night would give the Stars a 25-7 set three win and their fourth Northern Athletics Conference victory.
The Star’s 15-0 run to start the third set would lead to an attack percentage of .368, their third best single-set attack percentage on the season. The match ended with Guerrieri tallying a match-high 24 assists, while Dezelski and Lawrence knocked down eight kills apiece and Dezelski led the way defensively with ten digs. Van Voorhis was also effective in her attack, recording points on seven of her 12 attempts for a .500 attack percentage.
The Stars continue NAC play on Fri., Sept. 30, as they travel to Madison, Wis., to take on the Edgewood College Eagles. Match start time is 7p.m.
