Stars Stave Off Raiders To Advance To NAC Finals

Box Score The Dominican University men’s soccer team outlasted the MSOE Raiders 2-1 on the Stars’ home pitch to advance to the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Tournament championship match for the seventh time in as many seasons.

After the two familiar foes felt each other out for much of the first 21 minutes, the Stars began to control possession and turn up the offensive pressure, eventually scoring on a Ryan Ybarra (Des Plaines, Ill.) corner kick that connected with David Aranda (Wheeling, Ill.) who was able to beat MSOE’s Garret Farin for his third goal of the season.

The score remained 1-0 into the 75th minute as the teams traded shots and chances.  With the Raiders pressing forward looking to net the equalizer, MSOE’s Logan Andryk ripped a bullet passed a diving Max Gutbrod to knot the score at one goal apiece.  The tally was Andryk’s 14th goal of the season.

The Stars were able to answer right back as sophomore Logan Marvin’s (Johnston, Iowa) high pressure attack forced the Raiders backline into a turnover as Marvin was able to then take a touch before beating Farin with what proved to be the game winner in the 79th minute.

Each team had one more golden opportunity apiece as Gutbrod made a spectacular diving save of the Raiders’ Michael Skow in the 87th minute and then on the counter the Stars’ Robbie Baird (Columbia, Mo.) hit the near post after Farin collided with one of his defenders leaving Baird alone in behind the MSOE defense.

The teams were even in shots at 15 apiece, both putting five on frame, but the Stars held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The win improves the Stars to 15-2-1 on the season while dropping the Raiders to 14-5-1.  It was Dominican’s 31st straight win over a conference opponent and extended the Stars’ conference unbeaten streak to 102 matches dating back to October of 2004.

The NAC Tournament Championship is scheduled for Saturday, with the Stars set to host the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons, who advanced past the Aurora University Spartans in a shootout after the teams played to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at West Campus Field.
