Stars Win Second Straight

Box Score The Dominican University men's soccer team is looking to start another conference unbeaten streak, posting their second straight victory in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Tuesday afternoon, topping the visiting Aurora University Spartans, 2-1 in River Forest.

"We are taking steps in the right direction but we need to play a complete 90-minute game," said Erick Baumann, the Stars' 19th-year head coach.  "We came out and executed our game plan early.  We played well in the first half and had control of the game through the first 45 minutes."

Baumann's Stars capitalized on a failed clearance attempt by the Spartans in the 18th minute, as Enzo Berrini (Bolingbrook, Ill.), who netted the game-winner on Saturday, carried the ball towards the end line before sending a low cross through the six-yard box where Marco Alvarez (Aurora, Ill.) who tapped a low shot past 6'8 Zach Richter for his second goal of the season.

Dominican played with the one-goal advantage all the way into the 77th minute when Berrini netted what would prove to be the game-winner.  Berrini would receive a pass from Logan Marvin (Johnston, Iowa) behind the Aurora defense, catching Richter off his goal line.  Berrini's shot would carom off a Spartan defender before ending up in the side netting.

The Spartans would pull within a goal as they were awarded a penalty kick in the 82nd minute after the Stars were whistled for a hand-ball inside the penalty box after a series of Spartan shot attempts in traffic in front of the Dominican goal.  Jason O'Brien was able to beat Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) who guessed left on O'Brien who went right on the Spartans' PK.

"The second half we got away from doing the things we did in the first half," said Baumann.  "We did not do a good job managing the game and let them back into it.  That will come and we will put together a complete 90 minutes."

The win pushes the Stars to 5-4-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in the NACC.  Dominican is now 5-2-0 in one-goal games having four consecutive games decided by one goal.  The Stars will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Sheboygan, Wis., to take on the Lakeland College Muskies.  Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
