Stars Top MSOE To Claim Eighth NACC Championship

Box Score

The Dominican University men's soccer team edged the MSOE Raiders 2-1 on Tuesday night, securing a share of the 2013 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Men's Soccer championship, the Stars' eighth straight NACC Championship dating back to the conference's inaugural season in 2006.

"I'm happy for the guys," said Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach, when asked about the victory. "This team has overcome adversity and a rough stretch earlier in the season. I said back then that the leadership and players on the roster would determine what direction our season would go. They are showing now where they want to go."

Gabriel Garcia (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Stars a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute as he collected a loose ball near the top of the 18-yard box, hitting a low shot through traffic inside the near post for his first goal of the season.

Garcia's tally highlighted a half dominated by Dominican possession as the Stars outshot the host Raiders 12-1 over the opening 45 minutes.

The Raiders looked sharp in the opening moments of the second half, eventually capitalizing on a Dominican University mistake in the 54th minute as Logan Andryk took a Stars' turnover near midfield and turned it into a 1v1 with Dominican's Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) resulting in Andryk's NACC-leading 15th goal of the season.

The Raiders then appeared poised to take their first lead of the match, drawing a penalty in the 67th minute but Gongora this time stoned Andryk's penalty kick, keeping the match tied at 1-1.

Gongora's save appeared to excite the Stars' offense as Dominican pressed forward over the next eight minutes eventually pushing across the game-winner as a Dominican set piece ended up in the back of the net by way of an MSOE defender for an own goal in the 75th minute.

"The win and a conference championship are nice," said Baumann, "but this team still has larger goals to accomplish. Now we need to get some rest and then get prepared for next Tuesday's NACC semifinal match."

The Stars held a 19-6 advantage in shots, putting eight shots on frame compared to three shots on goal for the Raiders.  Gongora logged two saves, improving to 9-3-2 in goal for Dominican on the season.

Dominican now stands at 10-4-2 on the year, going 8-1-1 in NACC play. The Stars, the two-seed in the upcoming NACC Tournament, will return to River Forest and be back on the West Campus pitch on Tuesday, November 5, playing host to the highest remaining seed after the #3 vs. #6 and #4 vs. #5 NACC quarterfinals matches that will be played on Saturday.
