Box Score The Dominican University women's volleyball team cruised into the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) semifinals with a three-set victory (25-16, 25-17, 25-21) over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in River Forest on Tuesday night.
The Stars had too many weapons for the Warriors with senior
Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich.) leading the way. Dezelski knocked down a match-high 16 kills on 34 swings with just two errors for a .412 hitting percentage.
Dominican's freshmen trio of
Tessa Griparis (Shorewood, Ill.),
Carri Chambers (Winnebago, Ill.) and
Maddi Zanoni (Hudsonville, Mich.) proved the perfect complement to the precise Dezelski. Griparis collected ten kills on 19 attacks while Chambers and Zanoni added nine kills and seven kills respectively.
"Our freshmen were outstanding tonight," said Ryan Baumgartner, Dominican's third-year head coach. "Their play tonight coupled with the way Claire has been playing the last month, put us in a great position to be successful."
The Stars put the Warriors away early in the first set, going on a 6-1 run with the score tied at 3-3. Dominican hit .394 in the first set, paced by Dezelski's seven kills on just 11 attempts. Dominican went 12-for-17 on sideouts in the set and held the Warriors to a .095 hitting percentage.
Set two was all about Griparis and Zanoni, as the Stars' freshmen middles combined for nine of the teams 14 kills in the set. Griparis also collected three block assists for a total of 6.5 points in the second set.
Set three was won by Dominican's outside hitters as Dezelski and Chambers took over, collecting 12 kills on 23 attacks without committing a single error.
Christina Wilson (Homer Glen, Ill.) ran the Stars' offense to perfection, dishing out a match-high 38 assists.
On defense, sophomore libero
Caitlen Foote (Dexter, Mich.) collected a match-high 14 digs while Dezelski rounded out another double-double performance, her 19
th of the season, with 12 digs.
The Stars, now 22-9 on the season, will host the Benedictine University Eagles (17-15, 9-2 NACC) in the tournament semifinals on Thursday. The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start in Dominican's Igini Sports Forum.
