Stars Ride Dezelski Past Benedictine

Box Score The Dominican University women's volleyball team punched its ticket to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament Championship match with a 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22) win over the three-seed Benedictine University Eagles on Thursday night in the River Forest.

Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich.), named the NACC Player of the Year on Wednesday, paced the Stars with a match-high 18 kills on 42 swings with just six errors for a .286 hitting percentage. Defensively, Dezelski rounded out her 20th double-double with 22 digs.

Dominican raced out to a 10-4 lead in the first set and never looked back. The Eagles did narrow the gap to 11-9 before back-to-back kills by Dezelski and freshman Maddi Zanoni (Hudsonville, Mich.) steadied the Stars who scored ten of the next 12 points en route to a 25-18 set one win.

Set two was back-and-forth with the Stars posting a .700 sideout percentage and the Eagles bettering that, going 18-for-23 on sideout attempts. With the score tied 21-21, the Stars handed the Eagles a 23-21 lead on back-to-back errors and BenU went on to even the match with a 25-22 win in set two.

After hitting just .097 in the second set, Dominican's offense roared back in the third set, collecting 13 kills on 36 attacks with just three errors. Dezelski and Carri Chambers (Winnebago, Ill.) logged four kills apiece in the set.

Dominican then delivered the knockout punch in the fourth set as Dezelski pounded down seven kills to seal the win. Dominican recovered from a 5-2 deficit early in the set, going on a 6-1 run sparked by Chambers and Zanoni. The Stars never trailed the rest of the way although the Eagles did manage to knot the set at 22-22 before Dezelski answered with back-to-back kills and Christina Wilson (Homer Glen, Ill.) sealed the win with an ace.

Chambers complemented Dezelski with 13 kills, posting eight kills with just one error over the second and third sets. Tessa Griparis (Shorewood, Ill.) added six kills and was in on eight of the Stars' 14 blocks for a total of 10.5 points in the match. Wilson ran the Stars' offense, collecting 36 assists while Caitlen Foote (Dexter, Mich.) patrolled the Stars' back row, gathering 22 digs to share match-high honors with Dezelski.

Dominican, now 23-9 on the year, will now travel up to Madison, Wis., to take on the top-seeded Edgewood College Eagles in the NACC Tournament Championship with the winner claiming the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. It is the Stars' fourth NACC Championship appearance in five years. The match is set for a 1:00 p.m. start in the Edgedome.
