Box Score The Dominican University women's volleyball team made quick work of the top-seeded Edgewood College Eagles, knocking off the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's (NAAC) regular season champion in three sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-20) to claim the NACC's tournament championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
Dominican asserted itself early in the match, posting a .257 attack percentage in the first set while holding the Eagles to a -.062 hitting percentage with just nine kills while the Stars collected 16 digs. Edgewood did manage to limit 2013 NACC Player of the Year
Claire Dezelski (Northville, Mich.) to just one kill on seven swings but that opened the door for freshman
Carri Chambers (Winnebago, Ill.) who knocked down five kills in the opening set.
"It was early on that their game plan was to slow down Claire," said Ryan Baumgartner, the Stars' third year head coach who has now guided the Stars to back-to-back NCAA national tournament appearances. "Edgewood setting their defense around her strengths allowed Carri to have the impact she had. It was really her best match of the season and couldn't have come at a better time."
Chambers continued to shine in the second stanza, collecting another seven kills on just 15 swings but the real story was Dominican's defense. The Stars logged 37 digs in the second set as Edgewood cut their errors from the first set in half to four, but still could not find any open space as the Stars allowed just nine kills.
Dominican then delivered the knockout punch in the third set as back-to-back kills by Chambers and Dezelski followed by a Chambers ace opened an 18-11 lead for the Stars and Dominican never looked back. Dominican's offense posted a blistering .405 attack percentage in the final set, tallying 17 kills on 42 swings without committing an error.
"The girls left Thursday's match against Benedictine with confidence and something to prove," said Baumgartner. "They knew they would have to play their best to beat a talented Edgewood team so we came out with fire, focus and played like champions."
Chambers finished the match with a career-high 18 kills on 37 attempts with just four errors. Dezelski and
Alyssa Davis (Bloomington, Ill.) added eight kills apiece while
Tessa Griparis (Shorewood, Ill.) knocked down seven kills. Setter
Christina Wilson (Homer Glen, Ill.) dished out 38 assits and totaled five kills.
Defensively,
Caitlen Foote (Dexter, Mich.) led four Stars in double-digit digs with a match-high 26 digs.
With the win, Dominican stands at 24-9 on the season, winning their second conference tournament championship and earning their third appearance in the NCAA Division III National Tournament since 2010. The Stars will find out the details of their national tournament appearance on Monday as the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Selection Show streams live at NCAA.com at 10:00 a.m.
