Box Score The Dominican University men’s soccer team fell behind 2-0 to the visiting Elmhurst College Bluejays before finally finding the back of the net in the 30
th minute in a 2-1 loss on Wednesday afternoon in River Forest.
“This was a disappointing result,” said Erick Baumann, the Stars’ head coach. “We got outworked on home field tonight. Physical and mental mistakes end up in the back of the net.”
Baumann’s Stars dug themselves an early hole as Elmhurst’s Mike Emig got in behind the Dominican defense, receiving a pass from Michael Delong, 1v1 with Dominican’s freshman goalkeeper
Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.), sliding a shot through Gongora’s legs and into the back of the goal.
Seven minutes later, Elmhurst added to its lead as Delong carried to the end-line before slipping the ball through the legs of a Dominican defender to create another 1-on-1 with Gongora. This time Delong finished the score himself, beating Gongora for his third goal of the season.
Dominican got its goal in the 30
th minute after
Robbie Baird (Columbia, Mo.) was taken down earning the Stars a restart in Dominican’s attacking third of the field. On the restart, Baird collected the Bluejays’ clearance attempt just outside the 18-yard box, settled before ripping a shot into the Elmhurst goal.
Dominican remained dangerous throughout the match, putting 11 shots on goal, including seven in the second half but was unable to net the equalizer.
The Stars held a 25-9 advantage in shots, earning 15 corner kick opportunities to just six for the Bluejays.
“We need to learn from this and get better,” commented Baumann. “We need to be the hardest working team on the field game-in and game-out.”
The loss drops the Stars to 2-1-0 on the season. Dominican will return to the West Campus Field turf on Saturday when the #22 Hope College Flying Dutchmen come to River Forest. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
