Streak Snapped As Stars Suffer First NACC Loss

Box Score The Dominican University men’s soccer team saw their 104-match conference unbeaten streak come to an end on Wednesday evening as the Benedictine University Eagles came to River Forest and pitched a shutout against the Stars in a 1-0 loss for Dominican.

“We didn’t play with enough pride,” said head coach Erich Baumann who was disappointed with his team’s performance.  “We couldn’t capitalize on a couple of opportunities and we lost another game on our home field.”

The Eagles tallied the lone goal of the game as Anes Kadaric played a through-ball from midfield to Edgar Reyes who sprinted past Dominican’s backline.  1v1 with Dominican’s Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.), Reyes slid a shot past Gongora on the ground and just caught the inside part of the post before crossing the goal-line for the junior’s second goal of the season.

The goal was the Eagles’ lone shot on goal in the match with Dominican holding a 14-8 advantage in shots with the Stars putting six shots on frame, all saved by the Eagles’ Zorohn Reed who picked up his second consecutive shutout.

“We are 3-4-0 for a reason,” said Baumann.  “They had one shot on goal and found the back of the net.  On the year we have given up just 33 shots on goal but have allowed 12 goals.  We are playing, and have played, poor team defense.”

The Stars conference unbeaten streak began back in October of 2004 after the Stars’ last loss to a conference opponent, a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Aurora University Spartans when the teams competed as members of the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference.  During the stretch, Dominican won eight consecutive conference championships and seven conference tournament championships.

“We need to deal with adversity and respond,” said Baumann.  “Where we go from here will be a reflection of the leadership and commitment we have on the roster.”

The Stars will have the opportunity to respond and look to start a new streak when Dominican travels to Fond du Lac, Wis., to take on the Marian University Sabres on Saturday.  The match is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff.
