Box Score 2 The Dominican University women's volleyball team opened the season with a bang on Friday, sweeping a pair of matches at the Elmhurst College Invitational from Spalding University and the University of Chicago. The wins were the first college coaching victories for Dominican University's Jeanne Czipri who took over the Stars' program in July.
Dominican took just three sets (25-20, 25-13, 25-14) to top the Spalding University Golden Eagles.
Carri Chambers (Winnebago, Ill.) paced the Stars' offensive attack with ten kills on 21 swings while committing just four errors. Chambers, a 2013 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) All-Freshman Team selection, added 11 digs for a double-double in the Stars' season opener.
Christina Wilson (Homer Glen, Ill.) ran the offense, dishing out 28 assists while
Cheyanne Kelly (Kalamazoo, Mich.) led the defensive effort with 12 digs.
The Stars held Spalding to just a .038 hitting percentage, collecting 45 digs and four total blocks. Across the net, the Stars hit .255 in the match, posting 39 kills to just 15 errors on 94 attempts.
After a short break, Dominican carried the momentum into a meeting with the University of Chicago Maroons, ranked 17
th in the AVCA Division III Preseason Top 25 poll, pulling out a four-set victory (25-19, 31-33, 25-20, 25-20).
The Dominican offense fired on all cylinders in the winning effort, with
Caitlen Foote (Dexter, Mich.) knocking down a team-high 16 kills with Chambers adding 14 of her own. Wilson nearly notched her first career triple-double, collecting 48 assists and 12 digs to go along with nine kills. Sophomore
Maddi Zanoni (Hudsonville, Mich.) eight kills while
Maddi Zanoni (Hudsonville, Mich.) knocked own seven.
As a team, Dominican hit .231 in the match while holding the Maroons to a .137 hitting percentage. The Stars' balanced effort carried over into the back row with four players tallying double-digit digs led by
Becky Honerlaw's (Waukesha, Wis.) 19.
At the net, Dominican tallied seven total blocks, led by Griparis who had two solo and three assists.
"I'm really proud of the way we responded after a hard fought second set in the Chicago match," said Czipri. "This team has come together really quickly and bought into everything our coaching staff is teaching. I'm excited to see what the future holds for us."
