Box Score The Dominican University men's soccer team snapped a four-match winless streak to open the 2014 season with a 2-0 win over the Carroll University Pioneers on Saturday afternoon in River Forest. Sophomore goalkeeper
Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) posted five saves in the winning effort while freshmen
Nestor Ascencio (Streamwood, Ill.) and
Jonathan Arzeta (Des Plaines, Ill.) provided the offense.
When asked about Saturday's match, Dominican University's head coach Erick Baumann replied, "we got a win."
Ascencio scored the eventual game-winner when he got on the end of
Gabriel Garcia's (Midway, Ill.) service in the 16
th minute, heading a shot that beat Jonathan Ramirez, the Carroll goalkeeper, inside the near post. Garcia's service was perfectly placed on the edge of the six-yard box and Ascencio was able to elevate above everybody to notch his first goal of the season.
Dominican tacked on another before the end of the first half as Arzeta collected a loose ball near the top of the box before splitting to defenders and ripping a shot from ten yards out and bending it inside the far post. The goal had tremendous buildup from the Stars as
Ryan Ybarra (Des Plaines, Ill.) carried along the left flank before sliding a pass to
Carmelo Abate (Bartlett, Ill.) who was running up the middle of the field. While a defender stopped over to cut off Abate, Arzeta was trailing the play and was right there to regain possession for the Stars before netting his team-leading third goal of the season.
Both teams managed three shots apiece during the second 45 minutes but Gongora made one save over the final 45 and three saves total to pick up his first victory in goal on the season.
The Stars held a slight 12-10 advantage in shots but the Pioneers put five on frame while the Stars tallied just three shots on goal. Dominican held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Stars, now 1-3-1 on the season, return to action tomorrow, traveling to Elmhurst College to take on the Bluejays at 7:00 p.m. under the lights at Langhorst Field.
